NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two major highway projects in Delhi-NCR on Sunday afternoon— the Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). These projects are designed to decongest Delhi, improve connectivity, cut travel time and reduce pollution.1. Two big projects: The PM will inaugurate the 10.1-km Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway and the Alipur–Dichaon Kalan stretch of UER-II with links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat.2. Total investment: Combined cost of the projects is nearly Rs 11,000 crore — Rs 5,360 crore for Dwarka Expressway’s Delhi section and Rs 5,580 crore for UER-II.3. Dwarka Expressway packages: Package I runs 5.9 km from Shiv Murti intersection to Dwarka Sector-21 RUB, while Package II covers 4.2 km to the Delhi-Haryana border.4. Part of larger corridor: The Delhi section complements the 19-km Haryana stretch of Dwarka Expressway, inaugurated by the PM in March 2024.5. Multi-modal connectivity: The expressway will connect Yashobhoomi, Delhi Metro’s Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station and Dwarka cluster bus depot.6. UER-II alignment: The new corridor runs from NH-44 (Alipur) to NH-48 (Mahipalpur) via Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka, with spurs to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat.7. Relief for commuters: The projects will ease pressure on Inner and Outer Ring Roads and junctions like Mukarba Chowk, Madhuban Chowk, Peeragarhi Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-9.8. Travel time savings: Travel from Singhu border to IGI Airport will drop from nearly two hours to just 40 minutes. North-to-south Delhi trips will also be smoother, and goods movement across NCR will become faster.9. Environmental benefits: Reduced congestion and shorter journeys are expected to lower fuel consumption and cut vehicular emissions, aiding efforts to fight Delhi’s air pollution.10. Part of bigger plan: The road transport ministry has taken up projects worth over Rs 50,000 crore to decongest Delhi and boost regional connectivity, with more in the pipeline.
